Pennyroyal leaf is also effective against troublesome menstrual symptoms, as it encourages menstrual flow and normalizes the cycle. Pennyroyal liquid extracts have been reportedly useful for water retention, cramping, diarrhea, headaches, and depression. Historically, Pennyroyal plant extract has been used as an insect repellent and to repel snakes as well. As an anti-inflammatory, it is also effective in reducing the swelling and itch of bug bites, as well as rheumatic conditions, such as gout.
Pennyroyal has been found helpful in easing coughs and congestion from colds and other respiratory infections. An expectorant, it alleviates dry, hacking coughs and helps expel phlegm. Traditionally, the herb has been used by Native Americans to treat whooping cough. It’s mint properties may act in dilating respiratory passages in bronchitis or asthma. As a diaphoretic, Pennyroyal herbal tincture may help to reduce fevers by inducing perspiration.
Royal is attached to its name because of the health providing potential that has put it on a pedestal within the mint family. It is said to be good for the digestive and it eases out problems caused by stomach pain or intestinal gas. Pennyroyal leaf tincture may also help to eradicate germs, and has been used for food poisoning and for promoting the removal of toxins like uric acid from the body. In fact, it is found to be particularly useful for the urinary tract, urethra, kidneys, and uterus. The highly poisonous nature of the plant makes it an antiseptic, for killing the germs or bacteria that can cause sepsis. However, this herb should be used in very mild doses internally as it is highly poisonous and an irritant.
There are certain reports that the herbal extract can be used as a depurative, a blood purifier, and certain components may help to neutralize toxins in the blood. Therefore, it should never be used for that purpose, as amounts needed may cause death.
Traditionally, the extracts were used as a gum strengthener, which is probably due to the astringent properties of the herb. This action makes the gums contract and tightens their grip on the teeth. The effects of this are also felt in other parts of the body. Since it induces contraction in other muscles and tightens them, pulling up the loose hanging skin, strengthening hair roots, and helping to stop hemorrhaging by contracting the blood vessels. The extract has been found to be a good external wash for skin eruptions, bruises, rashes, and itching. It is also an effective insect killer and repellant.

Contraindications: Pennyroyal should never be taken when pregnant. It is not recommended for lactating women and should not be taken by those suffering from kidney problems. High doses or overdose may cause death.
