Apricot kernel has the power to pacify kapha and vata doshas and aggravate pitta dosha. It is bitter in flavour, warm in nature and slightly toxic (see below) and is lubricating to the lungs and intenstines.
Apricot kernels have a destructive influence on various cancers The studies that have been done involve Laetrile and amygdalin specifically. These are, indeed, derived from apricot kernels, Amygdalin is a compound found in Apricot kernels for fighting against free radicals and combating the growth of cancerous cells.
An intense research study by Dr. Ernst Krebb, led to the discovery of Amygdalin or the B17 compound found in Apricot kernels and in about 1200 edible plant varieties throughout nature. Dr. Krebb also recorded in his study that amygdalin is a nitrioloside that bear a resemblance to the B complex structures. It is because of this reason; Amygdalin compound was named as B17.
The antioxidant property of Apricot kernel oil is due to the presence of B17 and laetrile (the resultant of amygdalin when purified and put in a concentrated form). Dr. Krebb tested the positive effects of laetrile on himself and concluded that laetrile extracted from amygdalin is extremely powerful in fighting against cancerous cells and preventing further cellular damage.
Apricot kernels have a natural analgesic (pain killing) effect. This is owing to the presence of benzaldehyde, one of amygdalin’s constituent parts. Benzaldehyde is scientifically acknowledged to be an effective analgesic that is relatively non-toxic and that is metabolized and excreted by the body swiftly.
Apricot kernels can lower blood pressure very effectively. Though this might be considered a benefit by some, this can be an issue for those who would like to use apricot kernels but already have a low blood pressure. For these individuals, it might be necessary to use something to counter this effect – perhaps liquorice root or something similar.
Apricot kernels have been used for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They are typically used to treat lung conditions, such as coughing and asthma. They are considered an effective expectorant (for expelling phlegm). They are also used to promote bowel movement and intestinal health.
Apricot kernels have proven antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties. This is found to be especially true against Candida albicans, which has strong cancer associations – perhaps another possible mechanism of action.
They have a powerful phytonutrient Amygdalin is a nitriloside and its structure most resembles that of a B complex vitamin, so Krebs named it “B17.”, amygdalin, vitamin B17. It breaks down during digestion to become hydrogen cyanide and benzaldahyde. Amygdalin found in apricot kernels and in laetrile contains benzaldehyde and cyanide, two potent compounds against cancer. Cyanide is actually one of the substances that makes apricot kernels a potentially effective modality for cancer. The body has the proper compounds to either neutralize or unlock the B17 molecules at the point of cancer. The enzyme rhodanese is found in normal healthy cells and will neutralize the Benzaldahyde and Hydrogen Cyanide and convert them into harmless compounds. Rhodanese is found everywhere in the body except for in or around cancer cells/tumours. In contrast, Beta-Glucosidase is found only at the site of cancer and is referred to as the “unlocking enzyme” since it will unlock the cyanide and benzaldahyde only where there are cancer cells or tumours. When glucose delivers B-17 to the cancer cells, the cancer cannot neutralize the cyanide since it lacks the rhodanese enzyme. Instead, the cyanide and benzaldahyde are released allowing them to target the cancer cells directly.
